Sotapanna 2: Buddha Hand Painting with Unalome Symbols

$50.00

Acrylic on gallery-style wood panel. Painted sides, no need to frame! Scroll down further to see full image.

This is an 8×10 painting with a cooling, calming effect as one considers the teachings of the Buddha and the nature of reality.

This painting and the other three matching paintings are called Sotapanna (1-4). Sotapanna is the first of the four stages of enlightenment, stream-entry. It literally means “one who enters (āpadyate) the stream (sotas),” with the stream being the supermundane Noble Eightfold Path regarded as the highest Dharma. (Wikipedia)

The painting has lots of touchable texture and the Buddha image is carved into the piece.  On either side of the hand is an unalome symbol – a visual image of reaching enlightenment. The spiraling twists and turns represents our struggle with life, while the straight line pointing upwards, represents the straight path to Enlightenment. Unalome are the “crowns” of the arahants, the enlightened noble ones.

This is a painting of Buddha’s hand in the Vitarka Mudra. This is a very popular image, which is the hand gesture that transmits Buddha’s teachings.

This painting brings a sense of unity and is a beautiful focal point when contemplating and calming the mind.
