Years ago when I first encountered a quince blossom, I was blown away at how beautiful it was. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! I’m still intrigued at the bright orangy-pink petals and vivid green leaves surrounding the flower. Usually spring tree blossoms are pastel, muted. Pinks and whites. The quince is just so striking in comparison!

I decided that this month’s giveaway painting should be a quince and I’d like to show you the my creative process in producing this painting.
First, I found a reference photo I liked and drew it in. The other painting is a cherry blossom for my Instagram giveaway I will host next week.
This month the painting is a 6×8 size, with gallery-wrapped canvas. I started with a green wash after texturing the canvas. I like working on a colored canvas instead of having vast white space staring back at me when I start.
Next I blocked in the colors of the petals. Did the undertones for the leaves. Got the shading right. Everything that is background working my way forward.
Next I blocked in color around the flower in the background. I shaded the petals and painted in the middle of the flower. The leaves are shaded, too, plus I painted the tree branches.
The finished piece looks like this:
You can see some of the background colors peeking through the overall muted background color I chose. The vivid green of the leaves really pop against the strong color of the petals. I love this painting and I think the winner will be a very lucky recipient!
